A Welcome Pink by Sandra Moreano

Red flowering currant

As winter loosens its grip and the days grow longer, early spring brings a delightful array of colors that hint at the beauty ahead. Among my favorite plants to watch for are those that paint the landscape with their vibrant hues—flowering red currants, the soft, muted tones of hellebores and lavenders, and the golden brilliance of witch hazel and daffodils.

Of them all, the red flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum) holds a special place in my heart. This native shrub unfurls its delicate pink blossoms alongside its fresh green leaves, a bold declaration of spring’s arrival. Each time I see its bright clusters, I can’t help but feel a sense of joy. Birds adore it too, flitting among the branches as if sharing in the season’s excitement.

Years ago, a dear friend introduced me to this beautiful plant, and ever since, I’ve spotted it everywhere—a familiar and welcome sight that never fails to lift my spirits. As one of the earliest bloomers of the season, the red flowering currant reminds me that spring’s splendor is just beginning.
